America's oldest soft drink was first introduced as a patent medicine by Dr. Augustin Thompson of Union, Maine in 1876 as "the only harmless nerve food" that could cure softening of the brain, loss of manhood and simultaneously give a "durable solid strength." Carbonation was added to the formula in 1884 and by the turn-of-the-century Moxie was more popular than Coca-Cola. Its unique flavor, full of vigor and intensity, has lived up to its name for well over a century.
